Under the agreement with the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Signal will perform MyPRS® testing on patient specimens to better inform key patient management decisions, including the risk of progression from the constellation of AMG disorders to symptomatic multiple myeloma. The parties also plan to collect next generation sequencing (NGS) data to capture additional genetic readouts that could further characterize patients at different points on the clinical continuum.
Multiple myeloma is often referred to simply as myeloma. It is a type of cancer that starts in the plasma cells of the bone marrow. These are protein-making cells which normally make all of the different kinds of proteins that comprise the antibodies of the immune system. In multiple myeloma, the plasma cells undergo what is referred to as a malignant transformation and thereby become cancerous.
The company believes they are the only company marketing a GEP test for assessing the status of MM in the United States. The MyPRS ® test is protected by a substantial patent portfolio of issued and pending patents. For further growth SGNL needs to have two things happen: wider acceptance of the testing procedure by oncologists, and more health care insurance providers willing to cover the cost of the testing.
The work that Signal is doing, even beyond MyPRS ®, is important, critical and can save lives. The future for SGNL will be determined by the medical community’s willingness to pay for advanced diagnostics, or by the long rumored possibility of an exit to a larger company.
