he firm says it will use the new investment cash to “fuel development and distribution of original holographic content, enabling HBO and Discovery to deliver new entertainment experiences to consumers across TV, mobile, web, social and emerging wearable technologies such as virtual and augmented reality.”
Stewart was already on board with a plan to produce current-events-focused short-form digital content, that will be refreshed on HBO Now throughout the day.
Stewart says, in a release this morning, that it’s “a limitless mind blowing creative platform,” and he dreams to “someday understand how they did it.”
Otoy was founded by Jules Urbach, who’s credited with creating the first internet 3D video game platform, which was licensed to Macromedia, Disney, Warner Brothers, Nickelodeon, Microsoft, Hasbro and AT&T.
He says that his mission is to “make holographic and immersive content a mass market proposition for consumers, artists and publishers alike. A key part of this endeavor is unifying production and delivery of content across all possible endpoints, from HTML5, to TV and social, to wearables.”
HBO and Discovery join a high-powered group of Otoy backers. Other investors include Autodesk and Russian venture capitalist Yuri Milner. The company’s advisory board includes WME-IMG chief Ari Emanuel, Alphabet CEO Eric Schmidt, former IBM chief Samuel Palmisano, and economist George Gilder.
HBO Programming President Michael Lombardo says that Otoy “has a roadmap for the future of entertainment and technology” that “perfectly aligns” with HBO’s ambitions.
